Dementia Friendly Alexandria is a volunteer initiative whose goal is to prepare the Alexandria community to support those with dementia and their caregivers and ensure their ability to engage in city life more fully. Dementia Friendly Alexandria is led by Goodwin House Alexandria and the City of Alexandria’s Commission on Aging in close collaboration with an action team that includes local government officials, home care providers, non-profits, faith-based organizations, and other community members. The action team plans to educate all sectors of the community about ways to support those with dementia and their caregivers. It is first focusing on training for first responders and those in faith-based communities who frequently come into contact with those with dementia. The goal is to engage those with dementia and their caregivers in all aspects of city life.
